Botox injections are commonly associated with treating deep wrinkles, creases, and fine lines that may occur on the upper face as we age. However, Botox injections have also been incorporated into a new jaw reduction treatment, with patients reporting a vastly improved appearance that softens strong jawlines, resulting in a more feminine appearance. This treatment has become most common among certain groups of Asians and also people with large jaw muscles (masseter muscle) from teeth grinding.
Dino R. Elyassnia, M.D., is proud to offer Botox jaw reduction treatments at his cosmetic surgery practice in San Francisco, CA. He is a board-certified plastic surgeon serving patients in the greater Bay Area with innovative and highly successful Botox jaw reduction treatments.
If you’re interested in reshaping the look of your strong jawline, here’s what you need to know about jaw reduction with Botox injections.
How Botox Jaw Reduction Works
This non-invasive procedure is much simpler than traditional jaw reduction procedures. It involves virtually painless injections of Botox directly into the masseter muscle located near the back of the jaw. The Botox slowly and gently reduce the size of the masseter muscle, which in turn reduces the appearance of a strong and square jawline. In about 4 weeks one can begin to see the results and the effects persist for greater than one year. Compared to traditional uses of Botox (ie between eyebrows, and forehead) the effects for the jawline last much longer. Most patients seem to need no more than 2-3 treatments over the span of several years to maintain the result and it is reasonable to consider this treatment very long lasting but not truly permanent. This treatment is ideal for patients who are looking for softer facial features, as it’s very effective at softening the appearance of what’s considered to be a more masculine jawline.
The Benefits of Botox Jaw Reduction
There are many benefits to Botox jaw reduction, with the primary one consisting of its non-invasive nature. Traditional jaw reduction surgery requires removal of bone and is associated with potentially significant complications. It is also more painful and has a much longer recovery period. Botox jaw reduction, on the other hand, is quick, virtually painless, and can be done within the span of a lunch hour.
Botox jaw reduction makes it possible for patients to eat right after the treatment without experiencing any pain. Patients of Dr. Elyassnia will expect to receive only 1 treatment to see a reduction in the width of the lower face. Some patients may wish to have a second treatment at 6 months to 1 year to get a more significant result. The need for any future maintenance treatments depends on each individual case.
